Product Description

Kangertech K1 Box MOD

This is Kange’s flagship 75Watt MOD, the Kangertech K1 Box. With the highest safety in mind, Kanger have turned to one of the most advanced chips for a vaporizer, the Evolv DNA 75. Other manufacturers can try to be this good, but Kangertech have realized the Evolv DNA 75 chip is far superior than current Asian in house chips, and have included the ELVOV in their flagship Kangertech K1 Box MOD.

To me this unit could have done with more power to help complete their range, I was thinking more towards 200watts, to cover the more advanced user end with this very aesthetically pleasing design. This however, was not Kangertech’s intention and this is directly aimed at an intermediate vaping enthusiast looking for a quality, highly collectable, individually designed, masterpiece.

If you are running very low ohms on your coils, and need a device with more power try these very affordable alternatives: Kanger KBOX160 Mod, Kanger KBOX200, or the behemoth Kanger AKD Five6.

Quality of the Build:

This unit is beautifully designed and each MOD looking different due to its very psychedelic stabilised wood finish. Our test unit came in a blue finish and the zinc alloy C surround is nicely curved, with the Evolv DNA 75 screen indented to protect from any unwanted knocks out in the field. The battery casing is accessed with a very well designed screw cap which then has a further thumb and finger twistable battery lock to stop any battery wobbling inside the unit and keep the contacts firmly in place. The size and weight of this MOD is perfect, it is very light even with the battery inside. The most portable of any single box MODs out there.

The only qualm I have with unit is the fire button being a bit spongy.

What works well on this Kangertech K1 Box MOD:

With this being 75Watts, all of Kangertech’s tanks, and most of other manufacturers tanks with a 510 thread fitting, are happy on this device, just leaving the Kanger DOTA RDTA on the edge of being useful with this MOD. (Advance Build, edge of ohms law dependant) I have been using the Kangertech K1 Box along with an authentic Sony VTC4 with a 30A rating, and teamed it up with the Kanger DOTA RDTA to test the limits of the MODs safety features and experience its use.

Captain Vapour Test:

I decided to test this MOD to the limit… My 0.16 Dual Coil Clapton Demon Build in the wonderful Kanger DOTA RDTA caused the battery to get very warm with a constant use for five minutes, this showed me the DNA chip’s excellent safety features, displaying how many amps drawn – 19Amps, and also showed weak battery when the battery was needing a recharge and taken to its limit. The power delivery was smooth and perfect for this aggressive coil build.

Do remember my build was for testing purposes to see what the Kangertech K1 Box MOD would do near its limit, you need at least a two battery MOD going below 0.2ohms with a Coil Build. I would advise running the Kanger DOTA RDTA with a 0.2ohm+ coil with the Kangertech K1 Box. Using this with a standard tank such as the Kanger TopTank Mini, Kanger PANGU tank or the PROTANK4 sees this device performing beautifully and safely, as to be expected on such a well constructed MOD device. Overall I love this MOD, and very happy to place this at the front of my collection.

Captain Vapour Review:

Kangertech K1 Box MOD – this is the first premium, high-end product that Kangertech have released in their 10 years in the vaping industry. Every unit is different with its beautifully hand-crafted, distressed wood finish. With your Captain’s local Port being in Motueka, New Zealand, we will always request the distressed wood finish on the more psychedelic side!
I was a bit dubious on its function when taking regard of its cost. This is a premium product which needs to deliver premium function – and it surely does. It boasts the top level DNA75 chipset which is also adjustable over USB with a Windows OS computer. The DNA75 has all the safety features and digital readout info you could ever need – my favourite is the fact that it shows you how many amps you are drawing from its single battery. The K1 box is capable of temperature control, where the Kanger Ni200 coils would be a perfect companion. My review used its wattage function to take it to its limit. While my testing setup is not what I would do for day- to-day use of a 75W single battery MOD device, I decided to go hard on the Kanger K1 Box to see all of its safety features in action, and we surely did. I built and placed a twin Clapton coiled 0.16 ohm setup in the Kangertech DOTA RDTA tank to give the Kanger K1 DNA75, and the battery, a run for its money. Knowing this was going to be on the edge of its capability, a 30A capable authentic Sony VTC4 was a no- brainer and the only safe choice.

Captain Vapour Kanger K1 Box

This unit arrived at the perfect time while I was tuning the now perfected Captain Vapour Mango Lassi E-Liquid, I was able to further its flavour and design with the starter/ intermediate vape unit delivery along with this unit running at 70w on a 0.16ohm coil, and it certainly delivered. Huge flavour to perfection! The Kanger K1 screen showed 0.16ohms for the coil resistance and presented 17 – 20 amps load on the battery in use.

For safety function testing, continuous use on the edge for over two minutes caused the Kanger K1 Box display to show ’Too Hot’. This is when the internal temperature of the device has hit a high level, I would never be using the device for this long continuously normally on such a power-hungry coil, so this was great to see and could potentially save an uneducated vaper, building crazy coil setups who does not understand Ohms law. I then pulled the battery out of the unit and placed safely into a container to allow the unit and battery to cool down. Twenty minutes later I put the battery back in using its excellent double screw mechanism that also has a second turning function which secures the 18650 battery onto the K1 Box’s connectors – this is a win too.
Next up for testing purposes was to undo one of the coils that were screwed into the DOTA RDTA and hit the fire button. This saw the Kangertech K1 Box’s display show ‘Check Atomizer’, another excellent safety feature of the DNA75 chipset. With the coil and screw tightened back up it was back to enjoying the Captain Vapour Mango Lassi flavour, after a few hours of normal use I was still seeing around 18A pull off the battery and then at 50% we get ‘Weak Battery’ warning which I would expect from a unit under heavy load with a single 18650 battery. The power delivery using its wattage mode was very consistent and smooth. For normal use of the Kangertech K1 Box I would not use such a load demanding setup, this had to be done to get the results from the DNA75 chipset. More info on this device’s DNA75 chipset can be found here: https://downloads.evolvapor.com/dna75.pdf
Overall this device handled as expected given I was putting a huge load on a single battery, if it was any other 75 watt capable MOD device I would have stayed safer with a 0.2ohm or 0.5ohm coil. Cost? Well you get what you pay for. The Kangertech K1 Box is a premium 75W MOD device.

Captain’s word on the K1 series:
I would like to see Kanger’s premium range extended. A DNA200 chipset K2 Box with two battery compartments, and a K3 Box with a DNA250 chipset with a three battery compartments would definitely be on the Captain’s table.
**This unit was tested under controlled conditions by an experienced sea-fairing vapist, please do not ever place a single 18650 battery running at 70w in a 75w MOD unless you know what you are doing. Never push your battery beyond its capability.
***Captain Vapour only stocks authentic Sony VTC4 batteries with a 30A rating. If you want to go 60 watts plus on an low ohm coil build, its going to take a lot out on the battery and its going to get hot. Please consider the solidly designed Kangertech KBOX160 MOD, or the smallest form factor for its output, the Kanger KBOX200 MOD, which both have two bays for 18650 batteries meaning less heat and better headroom under load at a very reasonable price.
